Rosario Dawson Speaks at SXSW Pt.2

IMG_0596Rosario Dawson had so many dope things to say….I had to part 2 this blog. There was a lot of subjects she tackled that I was personally dealing with. Depression was one of the things she talked about. I naturally go in and out of depressions but sometimes I just think its an artist thing. I think it’s a familiar area for a lot of us. There were a few points she made that personally resonated with me that I wanted to share in this blog. Starting with this first point below.

  • Know who you are and what you stand for

Rosario also talked about the knowing who you are and what you stand for. If you are going to be a leader out here I think that’s something you need to solidify. After having a few major life transitions, I had to take time and figure that out myself. Which leads me to the second point.

  •  Stop jumping on trends & trying to be who everybody else want you to be.

Rosario spoke about not jumping on trends and trying to be who everybody else wants you to be. Which never occurred to me that it happens in the acting world as it does in music. But I was like Amen!! The majority of my battles have been dealing with people around me who want me to do and be like everyone else and that’s not even the core of who I am as a person. I’m thinking legendary and legacy. I’m thinking 2 Pac, Kanye, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar. They’re thinking Young Thug and Baha Men lol. I’m thinking Adele, Lana Del Rey, Lorde and next to go Marina and the Diamonds. There’s a difference between being a visionary and being a participant in this industry. Which these participants are probably the reason why so much creativity is being stifled. That was something Rosario talked about as well.

( Side Note: Yo she went innnn that day, to the point where I thought that maybe the plane she just got off was about almost crash and now she has this new profoundness about life that she’s compelled to share) But anyway on to the next point.

  • Too much quantity not enough quality

Man Rosario had so many great points. She talked about how it was too much quantity and  not enough quality. Which is probably the problem with the entertainment industry as a whole but for me, it’s the reason while I no longer put out records just to be putting them out there. To me good isn’t good enough anymore which is why I feel everything I do needs to be phenomenal.

  • Being a good person is more beneficial than being the most talented

Rosario Dawson spoke about how somebody who isn’t necessarily the most talented person would get a role because if they had to film something for several months they would rather shoot with the actor who they enjoyed than the more talented person who’s a nightmare to work with. A mistake I’ve personally made one time too many. I will never ever work with a person who is talented but also terrible person. I don’t care how talented you are, I will never do that again.

To sum this up, Rosario Dawson had some really insightful things to say. I’m glad I got to meet her and gotten the opportunity to hear her speak. Now when I get into debates about certain industry concepts just expect to hear a lot of rebuttals that start off with “Well Rosario Dawson said…. haha
